Spongebob Squarepants Came Out As Gay?
Did you hear that Spongebob Squarepants is gay now? In a tweet on Saturday, Nickelodeon seemed to imply that everyone’s favorite animated sponge is gay, posting a picture of Spongebob with two LGBT Nickelodeon characters.
“Celebrating #Pride with the LGBTQ+ community and their allies this month and every month 🌈 ” said Nickelodeon’s Twitter, while featuring Avatar Korra from The Legend of Korra, who identifies as bisexual, and actor Michael D. Cohen from Henry Danger who reportedly transitioned from female to male two decades ago.
Reactions to the apparent news of the cartoon sponge’s sexuality ranged from jubilant to curious.
“Proud of Sponge for the courage, curious where Squidward’s at,” said @Birdarchist.
YouTuber Vito Gesualdi called out Spongebob for his apparently fraudulent marriage to Sandy Cheeks, calling it a “sham marriage.”
“This is when I knew Spongebob was gay,” said another poster who dropped a picture of Spongebob and Patrick with a baby carriage.
And finally, @Rambeaux007 doesn’t believe the hype that Spongebob is gay, pointing out that Nickelodeon and Spongebob creator Stephen Hillenburg said in the early 2000s that Spongebob is not gay, but “somewhat asexual,” which makes sense for a fictional kids sea sponge cartoon character. Hillenburg passed away in November 2018.
At the end of the day if this sponge is gay or not it’s up to him, right?
