This Man Went to Jail Instead of Returning His Dog to His Employer

This man loves his dog so much he literally went to jail for her.

Barry Myrick was given a bedbug-sniffing pit bull mix named Roxy by his employer, M&M Environmental in Queens.

For four years, Myrick and Roxy inspected commercial and residential properties together before Myrick was laid off by the company in March.

Roxy lived with Myrick, and they grew attached to each other.

“She’s a part of our family. This is the closest to kids we’ll have,” said Myrick.

When M&M Environmental gave Myrick a choice of being laid off or working without Roxy as a coronavirus cleaner, he returned his company car and credit cards, but kept Roxy.

At the time, a manager even said to Myrick, “You’re going to keep Roxy, right?”

But then, someone from the company demanded the dog be returned.

M&M sent a letter to Myrick calling Roxy “company property” and demanding that she be returned. Myrick refused and M&M reported Roxy as stolen to the Queens District Attorney’s Office. Myrick was facing charges of grand larceny, but refused to give up Roxy and turned himself in to the NYPD.

“I spent 15 hours in jail. I wouldn’t wish that on my worst enemy,” said Myrick. “The stories I heard were unreal — someone beat their stepdad with a baseball bat. I couldn’t tell anyone I was there for a puppy.”

At present, the judge in the case is allowing Myrick to keep Roxy until the case is over.

“My family said, ‘Give the dog back, you’ll get another one,’ ” said Myrick. “But I’ve emptied out my bank account, spent time in jail . . . what else can they throw at me? I’ll fight this to the end.”

M&M lawyer Gary Port said that the company owns Roxy and claimed that training a dog like her can cost $15,000. “My client did not give this guy a gift of $15,000.”

No matter what the outcome of this case, we suspect Myrick will never give back his dog.

“She’s not a golden retriever who will be happy-go-lucky with just anyone,” he said. “She has eyes for no one else.”

Man’s best friend indeed.
