Which States Gained the Most New Citizens in 2020? U-Haul Has the Answers

Between rising rents and dirty streets in cities like San Francisco and New York City, Americans were already moving in droves to new states. With the lockdowns making things tougher in some states on top of all that, even more New Yorkers and Californians especially are abandoning their old homes for greener pastures.

So where are people moving?

U-Haul has some answers.

U-Haul calculated which states are gaining residents by the net gain of one-way U-Haul trucks entering a state versus leaving that state in a calendar year.

The data they put together is from more than 2 million annual one-way U-Haul truck customer transactions.

Tennessee's influx of do-it-yourself movers during a turbulent year marked by the coronavirus pandemic means that a state other than Florida and Texas tops the growth rankings for the first time since 2015, when North Carolina led the way.

Here’s the list of the top gaining states, with their rank from 2019 in parenthesis. Washington, D.C. was ranked for some reason, and Hawaii wasn’t because obviously you can’t drive to Hawaii. Yet. Anyway, here’s the list.

1. Tennessee (12)

2. Texas (2)

3. Florida (1)

4. Ohio (7)

According to U-Haul, Texas and Florida were the top two destinations from 2016-19, and Texas had the largest net gain of one-way U-Haul trucks for three consecutive years before last year.

Now Tennessee has topped them both.

Of course U-Haul migration trends don’t officially mean Tennessee gained the most citizens, but it’s a good bet they’re right.

Looks like people are getting the heck out of Illinois and New Jersey as well. A good bet that’s where a lot of the new Ohio residents came from.

We’ve got our eyes on Wyoming — need to get Kanye as a neighbor to get those house party invites!
