But the greatest metal singer of all time comes down to two men, whether you like it or not.
James Hetfield of Metallica and M. Shadows of Avenged Sevenfold are 1-2 in the debate.
The question isn’t even who’s the best. The best is without question M. Shadows.
The range M. Shadows displayed on the album Waking the Fallen was unprecedented.

Shadows goes from all-out screaming to singing with amazing power.
Shortly after touring for this album, M. Shadows needed vocal cord surgery, and never sang quite the same way again.
Here is how Avenged Sevenfold sounded live with Shadows at his peak.
The band did a great job transitioning their sound to match their singer’s new singing style after his surgery, but they never matched their early work on Waking the Fallen.
Hetfield on the other hand never reached M. Shadows at his peak, but has a long, long career of consistent hits.
Metallica started dropping premium albums in 1983, peaking in 1991 with hits like Enter Sandman and The Unforgiven on their self-titled album, and still churned out hits in 2003 with St. Anger.
So who’s the greatest? The man with the highest peak? Or the consistent star with incredible longevity?
We’re gonna give the tiebreak to M. Shadows for being an all-around cool dude.
The man has evident character, and character counts.
