Ray Allen Says LeBron Still Calls Him to Thank Him For His 2013 Finals Game Saving Shot
We’ve taken some shots at LeBron at The Daily Dropout — especially with how much his peers have called him a crybaby.
But this here deserves respect — LeBron still calls Ray Allen just to thank him for hitting the game saving shot in the 2013 Finals.
Here’s an excerpt from a recent interview with Ray Allen:
“Do LeBron or Coach Spo [Erik Spoelstra] ever call you out of the blue to thank you for knocking down that shot?”
Ray Allen: “Oh yeah, they do. They definitely do. And I owe them a debt of gratitude for accepting me into the fold. They already had a championship environment, and to welcome me in to help them get to the next level, that's what true winners do. They always continue to find ways to win by any means necessary. They're always willing to learn and get better. There hasn't been a year that's gone by where either one of them hasn't mentioned 2013 to me. They're always grateful for my input.”
“So what's the conversation like? Do they say, ‘Hey man, thanks for saving my ass in Game 6?’”
Ray Allen: “It's always just words of affirmation. When you win on any level -- I always try to impress this upon kids that I speak to -- it immortalizes you. You'll forever be talked about. You're part of the history of the game in that organization that you've won with.”
To show gratitude over 7 years later, even after winning a recent title with the Lakers, shows a lot of character on LeBron’s part.
To keep the appreciation for a teammate that helped you win a title is special.
Allen’s shot might be the greatest in NBA history, and definitely saved LeBron from being called a choke artist for an entire year — or longer.
Allen hitting a 3 pointer while backpedaling without even looking at his feet with the Finals on the line — it’s still incredible.
Spurs coach Gregg Popovich later found out Ray Allen had actually PRACTICED for this exact scenario and was totally mind-blown by it.
So good on LeBron for keeping his appreciation strong.
Appreciation is underrated.
