The Green Room

The Green Room is a horror-thriller film starring Patrick Stewart (X-Men), Anton Yelchin (Star trek), Imogen Poots (28 Weeks Later) and Alia Shawkat (Arrested Development). It’s about a punk band who plays a show at a Neo-Nazi Skinhead bar in remote Oregon. After the show they witness a murder and are held against their will in the green room by the skinheads. A green room is a room in the back of the stage reserved for only for band members. The leader of the skinheads (Patrick Stewart) orders his men to kill the band members to eliminate all witnesses. The band members must fight for their lives to survive. The director, Jermey Saulnier, got the idea for the movie when he wanted to write a thriller that took place all in a green room. This film is perfect if you like slasher-thrillers. It has a 90% on Rotten Tomatoes and seeing Patrick Stewart playing the role of a heartless, murdering Nazi leader is something you have to see.

I am Mother

I Am Mother is a 2019 Australian science fiction thriller movie starring Hillary Swank (Logan Lucky), Rose Byrne (X-Men: First Class) and Clara Ruugard (The Lodge). The film is about a post-apocalyptic world where an android named Mother raises a human child named Daughter in an underground bunker to repopulate the earth because all the humans had died. One day Daughter hears a woman crying for help and lets her in the bunker. The woman tells Daughter that androids aren’t to be trusted. If you are a fan of sci-fi that makes your hair stand up then this post-apocalyptic thriller is for you. Hillary Swank and Clara Ruugard (who came from acting on the Disney Channel) do an excellent job in this film. I Am Mother has a 90% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Velvet Buzzsaw

Velvet Buzzsaw is a supernatural satirical horror movie made in 2019 directed by Dan Gilroy. Gilroy also directed the critically acclaimed film, Night Crawler, starring Jake Gyllenhaal. Jake Gyllenhaal also stars in this film along with Toni Collette (The Sixth Sense), and John Malkovich (Bird Box). Velvet Buzzsaw takes place in the contemporary Art scene in Los Angeles. A girl name Josephina finds her neighbor dead and discovers several really good paintings in his apartment. She gives them to her friend who has a gallery and they become very popular in the scene. Josephina starts to profit from the dead man’s paintings but unbeknownst the subjects in the paintings can come to life. The film is very satirical and makes fun of the pretentiousness of the Art world but it’s also a very good thriller that will have you on the edge of your seat the whole time. Jake Gyllenhaal and John Malkovich are some of the best actors alive today and they absolutely kill in this movie.
Tucker & Dale Vs. Evil

Tucker and Dale Vs. Evil is a hilarious horror-comedy starring Tyler Labine (Reaper) and Alan Tudyk (Rogue One). The movie is about two lovable hillbillies who are mistaken for evil killers by a group of college students who think they kidnapped and murdered their friend. The college students band together to overtake the hillbillies at their cabin but they keep accidentally killing themselves. It’s a very clever take on the “classic slasher” films, where there’s a killer after kids in the woods, except this time it’s the kids trying to kill the killers, or who they think is killers. If you love laughing and gory slasher killing then watch this movie. It has an 85% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

The Conjuring

The Conjuring is a supernatural horror film directed by James Wan, who directed the classic horror-thriller, Saw. The film stars Vera Farmiga (The Departed) and Patrick Wilson (Watchmen) as a married couple who are demonologists and paranormal investigators in the early 1970’s. They are contacted by another married couple with 5 children to investigate their old farmhouse in Rhode Island they just moved into. This becomes the paranormal investigators most disturbing case, as they come in contact with several angry spirits in the house. The Conjuring is not for the light hearted. You really have to like to be scared if you want to watch this film. Horror movies do not get any better than this. The Conjuring has an 85% on Rotten Tomatoes. What’s crazy is that it’s based on a true story. There actually is a married couple who travels around and performs exorcists in peoples homes.
Haunting of Hill House

The Haunting of Hill House is a supernatural horror drama Netflix series created by Mike Flanagan. Flanagan is a popular horror film director who is known for Hush and Ouija: Origin of Evil. The series is loosely based off a novel by the same name. The plot revolves around two timelines; one of a family of five siblings and their parents living in an old haunted house called Hill House in the early 90’s. Paranormal events lead up to an awful eventful night, where the family runs away from the house. The other timeline is of the 5 siblings all as adults who continue to be haunted by their experiences living at Hill House. The series premiered last October on Netflix and quickly became a big hit. The ensemble cast of the 5 siblings, both as children and adults, did an amazing job in this horror-thriller drama series. The Haunting of Hill House is 10 one-hour episodes of riveting story telling. If you’re a fan of the genre and haven’t seen this show yet, you need to. Now that tv series are just as popular and good as films, The Haunting of Hill House will definitely become a classic. It has a 92% on rotten Tomatoes.
The Witch

The Witch is a period supernatural horror film that takes place in 1630’s New England. It tells the story of a deeply religious Puritan family who is banished from Plymouth colony over a religious dispute. They go off and live in a remote area in the woods by themselves. After their baby is stolen, presumably by a witch, the family must deal with evil forces that lives in the woods surrounding their home. The Witch is truly a unique horror movie. It doesn’t just use cheap jump scares to jolt it’s audience. The film slowly builds up to the creepiest parts, making it more disturbing. The Witch was a big hit in the box office. It grossed $40 million having only been made on a budget of $4 million. This film is reserved for the true horror film fans because of how scary and creepy it is.
Scream

Scream is a 1996 horror-slasher film directed by the legendary horror director, Wes Craven. Craven pioneered the slasher horror-comedy genre, that uses satire, cliches and humor to drive the story. His first was the iconic film, Scream, which starred Drew Barrymore (Santa Clarita Diet), David Arquette (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Courtney Cox (Friends), and Rose McGowan (Charmed). The film is about a high school student stalked by a psycho killer who is obsessed with scary movies and dressed in a Halloween costume, named Gohstface. The film combines black comedy, “whodunit”mystery with the gory violence of slasher movies. Scream was unique for its time because the characters in the film routinely reference cliches in horror movies while themselves were in a horror film. Scream made 171 million dollars world wide in theaters. Now, it’s considered a classic horror film. It’s a fun one to watch with friends when you don’t have anything better to do. It has a 79% on Rotten Tomatoes.
The Sixth Sense

The Sixth Sense is a supernatural horror film directed by M. Night Shyamalan. It was Shyamalan’s first film he wrote and directed that made him very famous. He is known for his contemporary supernatural plots with twist endings. The Sixth Sense is his most well known film. It stars Haley Joel Osment as a boy who can see and talk to dead people. His mother (Toni Collette) hires a child psychologist (Bruce Willis) to help him. The film probably has one of the most infamous endings ever in cinema. It was a smash hit in the box office, making over $600 million world wide. It was the highest grossing horror film ever until It surpassed it in 2017. On every “top horror films ever made” list online, Six Sense is definitely up near the top. It holds a 86% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Carrie

Carrie is a 1976 supernatural horror film based on the legendary writer, Stephen King’s first novel of the same name. The film was directed by Brian De Palma, who is regarded as one of the best directors of Hollywood for his suspenseful films. Carrie stars Sissy Spacek and was John Travolta’s very first movie role. It’s about a Highschool girl named Carrie who is bullied by her peers at school and abused by her religious fanatic mother at home. Carrie discovers she has telekinetic powers. She finally snaps one day after going through a humiliating prank and murders her schoolmates. Carrie is often regarded by experts as one of the greatest horror films of all time. The movie was made for 1.8 million dollars and grossed over 30 million. It was nominated for 2 Oscars and 1 Golden Globe Award. It has a 95% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
