Eternal Sunshine On The Spotless Mind

Released in 2004, Eternal Sunshine On The Spotless Mind is science fiction film about romance. Starring Jim Carrey as Joel Barish, a heartbroken man who hires a company to erase all the memories he has of his recently ex-girlfriend. However during the procedure, after he sees all the good memories he has of his ex-girlfriend, he changes his mind and tries to save all the memories he has of her from being erased. The story is told in a non linear way and at times the movie plays like a psychological thriller. It won two 2 Academy awards, Best Original Screenplay and Best Actress for Kate Winslet. From the film’s 20 million dollar budget it made 70 million dollars worldwide in the box office.

Pi

Pi is an Independent psychological thriller about a genius mathematician on the brink of insanity. After he programs his homemade super computer to find predictions in the Stock Market it prints a strange 216 digit number that haunts his life. People come after the mathematician because the number is the answer to what their looking for, from crashing the stock market to discovering God’s name in the Jewish Torah. It’s definitely a bizarre film but it will not disappoint. Pi was directed by Darren Aronofsky (Requiem For a Dream, Blackswan) as his first feature film. He won Best Directing at the Sun Dance Film festival in 1998 and he also won an Independent Spirit Award for Best first screenplay.

Donnie Darko

Donnie Darko is a 2001 science fiction movie that stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Drew Barrymore. The film follows a troubled teenage boy name Donnie who sees visions of a man in a bunny costume that tells him the world will end in 28 days. The movie was given a limited release but did not perform well in the box office. It is said to be because the film was marketed well because in the film a jet liner engine crashes into a house and the 9/11 attacks happened earlier the year. However the film did very well in the home video market grossing over 10 million dollars.

Being John Malkovich

Being John Malkovich is a 1999 comedy-fantasy film directed by Spike Jonze. It stars John Cusack, Cameron Diaz with the actors John Malkovich and Charlie Sheen playing themselves. The movie is about a loser puppeteer who finds a portal into the movie star John Malkovich’s mind and gets to see through his eyes and experience what he experiences. Through John Malkovich he pursues the love of one of his co-workers. It won three Academy awards for Best Director, Best Original Screenplay and Best Supporting Actress for Catherine Keener.

Primer

Primer is a 2004 science fiction movie about two engineers who accidentally discover time travel. The film was written, directed, produced, edited and composed all by Shane Carruth. He made this film for only $7,000 and it won the Grand Jury Prize at the 2004 Sundance Film Festival. It is said to be the most complicated time travel movie ever made.

Swiss Army Man

Swiss Army Man is a 2016 adventure film, starring Paul Dano and Daniel Radcliffe. It is about a man trapped alone on a deserted island who finds a dead corpse that washes up on the beach. Upon discovering the corpse has special powers, like being able to produce unlimited drinking water, the man takes the corpse along with him as he makes his way home. The film premiered at the 2016 Sun Dance Film Festival.

A Clockwork Orange

A Clockwork Orange is a 1971 film directed by Stanley Kubrick. It’s about Alex, a leader of a violent gang of boys living in a dystopian future. After Alex is caught and sent to prison for one of his crimes he signs up for a secret medical program to reduce his sentence. It was nominated for an Academy award for Best Picture but lost. It has since became a classic and cult film, especially because it was directed by Stanley Kubrick.
