Top Hits of Summer 2019 So Far

“Old Town Road” by Lil Nas X featuring Billy Ray Cyrus

“Old Town Road” is American rapper Lil Nas X’s first hit single. It’s more like a smash hit, given all the fame and success this song has given him. He originally dropped the song in December of 2018 and it went on to become a meme on the popular video app TikTok. With all the attention he was was getting online, Columbia Records then signed Lil Nas X. Since the song is in the “country trap” genre (a hybrid of country and rap), it went on the Billboard Hot Country Chart as well where it peaked at #19. But it was taken off because Billboard felt it wasn’t “country” enough, sparking a bit of controversy. Then Billy Ray Cyrus collaborated with Nas and they put out a remix to the song that reached #1 on pretty much all the charts and is still going strong. At just under 2 minutes, the original “Old Town Road” is the 5th shortest #1 song in history.

That song would turn out to be “Dancing With A Stranger” and it was released in January 2019. It was a commercial as well as a critical success, climbing to #3 in the UK and #7 in the US.

“Me!” by Taylor Swift

T-Swift is back with an all new track from her upcoming seventh studio album. In collaboration with Panic! At the Disco’s frontman Brandon Urie (who just had a hit single of his own), the song “Me!” has everything we love about Taylor. When the song was released it debuted as #100 on the US Billboard Hot 100 then jumped all the way to #2 (behind “Old Town Road”), making it the chart’s biggest jump in a just week in its history.   The song also broke four Amazon music records; for the most first day streams, most first week streams, most requested song for Alexa to play when it debuted and most requests for Alexa to play in its first week.
