Most Anticipated Films Coming This Fall
Ad Astra
Stars: Brad Pitt, Tommy Lee Jones, Donald Sutherland, Ruth Negga
Directed by: James Gray (The Lost City of Z)
Comes out: September 20, 2019
Ad Astra is the tale of astronaut Roy McBride, who is sent to the outer reaches of our solar system to find out what happened to his father, who went missing 16 years prior on a secret mission looking for extraterrestrial life. He also unravels a mystery about a deadly “highly classified” material that could destroy all life. Brad Pitt plays Roy McBride while Tommy Lee Jones plays his missing dad. The trailer makes this film look like a very realistic sci-fi action adventure story. James Gray said that he wanted to make Ad Astra “the most realistic depiction of space travel that’s been put in a movie.”
Joker
Stars: Joaquin Phoenix, Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz
Directed by: Todd Phillips (The Hangover trilogy)
Comes out: October 4, 2019
Joker is about Arthur Fleck, a failed stand up comedian who goes insane, then turns to a life of crime and ultimately becomes the infamous, legendary villain, the Joker. Set in 1981, in Gotham City, Joker is a psychological thriller that also stars Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, Francis Convoy, Marc Maron, Bill Camp, and Glenn Fleshier. Leonardo DiCapio was thinking about playing the Joker before Phoenix got the part. The film will be a stand-alone film with no plans of sequels. It’s going to be the start of DC movies that aren’t necessarily related to the DC Extended Universe. Warner Brothers, the studio who owns DC’s movie rights, wants to experiment more with DC characters, to let filmmakers explore more opportunities with them. Instead of a massive budget, Joker was produced for only $55 million. That is a lot of money, but when it comes to comic book movies that’s not very much, meaning this film is going to be more about the character than a spectacle of nonstop CGI and special effects.
Zombieland: Double Tap
Stars: Emma Stone, Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Abigail Breslin
Directed by: Ruben Fleischer
Comes out: October 11, 2019
Zombieland Double Tap, is the sequel to the 2009 block buster hit, Zombieland. With the same band of characters trying to survive in a post apocalyptic world full of zombies, only this time the zombies have evolved. Literally everyone from the first film is back for the sequel; the writers, the director and the cast, along with some new faces. Woody Harrelson explained in an interview, that as soon as they were done shooting the first film he said that he has never been more excited to be a part of a sequel. We’re all excited too.
A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood
Stars: Tom Hanks
Directed by: Marielle Heller (The Diary of a Teenage Girl)
Comes out: October 18, 2019
A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood is a drama about an award winning journalist who writes a profile piece about the kids television star Fred Rogers. Spending time with Fred and learning about who he is and where he has come from changes the cynical journalist life forever. Tom Hanks will be the iconic Fred Rogers and Marielle Heller will be directing. A lot of pressure is on these filmmakers because Fred Rogers from Mr Roger’s Neighborhood is such an American icon. The recent documentary about his life, Won’t You Be my Neighbor, won many awards and is one of the most watched documentaries of all time.
Terminator: Dark Fate
Stars: Arnold Schwarzenegger, Mackenzie Davis, Linda Hamilton, Gabriel Luna
Directed by: Tim Miller
Comes out: November 1, 2019
Terminator: Dark Fate is the latest installment of the franchise The Terminator, about a new and improved terminator sent back in time to kill Sarah Connor and her friends. Kind of sounds familiar huh? What’s so anticipating about this film is that James Cameron, the original creator of The Terminator, is apart of it. He hasn’t been involved in a Terminator film since the second one in 1991. Also, Linda Hamilton, the OG Sarah Connor is back onscreen since ’91 too. James Cameron considers this movie to be a direct sequel to the original Terminators made in the 90’s. All the other Terminator films made in the 2000’s and 2010’s take place in alternate timelines. Hopefully Cameron can deliver a film good enough for the die hard fans.
Ford vs Ferrari
Stars: Matt Damon, Christian Bale, Caitroni Balf, John Bernthal
Directed by: James Mangold
Comes out: November 15, 2019
Ford vs. Ferrari follows the incredible true story of the lead up and victory of the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans race, Ford had over Ferrari. The Ford and Ferrari racing teams had a bitter rivalry with Ferrari always coming ahead. That all changed when automotive genius Carroll Shelby, played by Matt Damon, designed the Ford GT40. British race car driver Ken Miles, played by Christian Bale, drove the GT40 in the race to make history. 20th Century Fox has been working on this film for the better part of a decade, originally it was to have Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt in it. But I think we can all make do with Damon and Bale just fine.
